Ryan Hatlelid joined Collaborative Insight Counseling Associates (CICA) as an independently licensed psychotherapist in August 2020.

He specializes in working with clients with depression, anxiety, and relationship issues, and is particularly passionate about working with clients in the LGBTQIA community. Ryan holds a firm belief that not only is an individual’s inner experience important to understand, but that person’s context on a systemic level should be validated and factored into their therapeutic work in order to have an accurate picture of the challenges they are navigating. This is also a value and belief he strives to maintain in his clinical work as well. Ryan holds this in mind when working with clients regarding their gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability, and other factors. Ryan values therapy as a processing space where clients’ external contexts and inner worlds are illuminated, and upon exploring these things, the challenges to navigate and skills to do so make more sense.

“The goal is to give my clients the space to clarify their strengths, needs and surrounding context, developing a therapeutic relationship that serves to maintain stable ground to work towards greater fulfillment.”
— Ryan Hatlelid, LMHC

Before joining the practice, Ryan built experience in a range of settings and programs, including individual outpatient therapy, group therapy, residential treatment and partial hospitalization. This varied experience at different levels of care helped him develop a sense of clinical scope in working with clients with a mixture of acute needs and long-term goals and determining how they relate. Ryan has worked with clients on issues ranging from mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma symptoms, substance abuse disorders, thought disorders, to adjustment disorders and relationship difficulties.

Ryan attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he originally studied Games & Simulations Arts & Sciences with an additional B.S. in Psychology. Upon graduating, Ryan realized that he had greater interest in continuing his education with the latter degree, attending Salem State University and earning his M.S. in Counseling. He has since gone onto earning independent licensure as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC).

Fun fact: He loves spicy food and always has a supply of scorpion pepper salt on hand at home to heat up his dishes!
